Training with tradition
The Saratoga Harp Colony is an advanced training ground for the world’s next generation of professional harpists. The colony is a true pedagogical institution, with emphasis on individual development for promising young harpists as well as professionals. A distinguished faculty conducts an intensive program of private lessons, masterclasses, ensembles, and orchestral training.
Set in Saratoga Springs, New York, the colony shares its home with The Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York City Ballet, and the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival in summer residence at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The tremendous breadth of musical experiences is second to none.
Harpists looking for a rigorous orchestral training program will benefit from mock auditions, on-stage understudies, and guest artist seminars. There is also full exploration of harp literature, whether one is looking to pursue competitions or merely seeking a greater knowledge of the repertoire.
Most importantly, the Saratoga Harp Colony is a place of inspiration where one can build friendships, share ideas, enrich one’s musical talent in a intimate atmosphere – and have a thoroughly enjoyable time while doing it.
SHC harpists will participate in Sunday’s concert at Zankel Hall and participate in harp ensemble led by Nancy Lendrim.
|Duration||August 2-9, 2015|
|Location||Saratoga Springs, NY Skidmore College|
Masterclasses will be taught by Elizabeth Hainen and María Luisa Rayan. Please prepare a 15 minute memorized program from the major solo harp repertoire, 2-4 harp parts/or cadenzas from the major orchestral repertoire (i.e., Swan Lake Suite, Symphonie Fantastique), and a work in progress or a new work you wish to study.
Harpists looking for a rigorous orchestral training program will benefit from mock auditions and guest artist seminars. This is a wonderful opportunity to perform your orchestral excerpts in a simulated audition environment. Participants will draw numbers and play for a panel of esteemed members of the Saratoga Harp Colony faculty and The Philadelphia Orchestra. The mock audition is an invaluable experience for any harpist interested in an orchestral career.
‘Play with the Pros’
Now in its Eighth Season, Play with the Pros Concerto Competition is a one-of-a-kind partnership with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Our program offers highly individualized, personal instruction from artists of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and rewarding opportunities for performance of the highest caliber. This year’s required repertoire is the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto.
“The Saratoga Harp Colony is an enriching and rewarding experience. No other harp camp can combine all the different elements of performance life the same way that Saratoga does. The Colony incorporates orchestral repertoire classes with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This is truly a priceless experience that provides invaluable orchestral training. At the same time, the Colony incorporates many opportunities for solo performances, such as several recitals and numerous masterclasses. On top of all that, my personal favorite aspect of the SHC is the opportunity to perform in a harp ensemble. I can think of no other camp that offers a harp ensemble at such an advanced level. The Saratoga Harp Colony has offered me such a detailed and comprehensive preparation for the professional world, and I continue to be amazed by the experience.”Anna Odell, Professional Artist Diploma student, Curtis Institute of Music
